With fruit and vegetables from conventional cultivation (i.e. not organic), a lot of pesticides and fertilizers are used in agriculture, as they destroy parasites and thus make the harvest more productive and cheaper for producer and consumer.
However, these substances can have acute or chronic negative effects on human health:
Acute | Chronic |
Skin irriation | Cancer |
Mucosal changes | Asthma |
Headaches | Diabetes |
Dizziness | |
Nausea |
This is why organizations such as Greenpeace or the German Federal Ministry of Consumer Protection and Food Control (BVL) publish an annual list of recommendations for fruit and vegetables that should be purchased from organic cultivation if possible in order to avoid potential health risks.
On this list are:
- Strawberries
- Cherries
- Apples
- Peaches
- Salads
- Cucumber
- Pears
- Grapes
- Bell Pepper
- Kale
- Spinach
Some of these fruits and vegetables like spinach, strawberries or cucumbers are certified organic in our partner blends.
What does organic mean?
The terms "organic" and "eco" have been legally protected since 1993. Foods that are labelled with these terms meet the requirements of the EG Eco Regulation:
- No use of chemical synthetic pesticides and fertilisers
- Animal-friendly farming with the possibility to go outside and other minimum standards for animal husbandry (e.g. daylight, access to outdoor areas)
- Ban on genetic modification
- Low use of additives
- At least 95% of the product ingredients must come from organic farms.
